What to Expect at Your Physical Exam

Speciality physicals can be routine way to check up on your body. In other circumstances, they may be required before you can play a sport, go to school, or get a job.

While men and women may get a few different tests, the exam for both will usually include the discussions or checks on the following:

Any changes
in your health

Your practitioner may ask for an update on your health history or to determine if there is anything that may be causing any issues. This may include questions about recent procedures, medications, allergies, supplements, stress levels, your job and relationships.

Expect your practitioner to check your heart rate and respiratory rate. These tests are typically recommended once per year, but may be recommended more frequently depending on your status or family history.

Your doctor will evaluate parts of your body that may indicate the presence of health issues. These areas will include your head and neck, chest, eyes, abs, hands and wrists, and nervous system functions.

In addition to the visual exam, expect the doctor to use tools to evaluate other parts of your body. For example, the doctor will likely listen to your heart and lungs, look into your ears, nose and throat, and check your eyes. They may also test your motor skills and reflexes.

If you have any other questions about your physical exam or what may be required based on your specific type of physical, contact our office.
